Eeek, 9 days since the first of these blog posts and it feels like I haven’t done anything 😀 That isn’t actually true, Henrik and I finished chapter 4 and 5 in the crystal growth book, I applied for change of subjects on my PhD plan and phd.tex has been created! So I’m actually doing ok 😉 Front page:
I remember the writing part on my masters which was very hard in the beginning. Currently, the writing is very slow, but I know (didn’t when I wrote my masters) that once I just into it, it isn’t so hard and the pages come easily.
The plan for the rest of the week is to get some idea of the direction of the thesis. The PhD thesis in Norway (at least UiO) typically consists of an introduction (~40 pages) that will try to tie all the work together, then a list of papers.
For me it makes sense to use Atomify and faceting of silicon carbide nanoparticles (n-SiC) as the main work that defines everything. That would be Atomify as a new, improved way of developing and testing new ideas in molecular dynamics. It is faster to test parameters (temperatures, pressures, etc) when you immediately get the response rather than waiting for the simulation to finish. This is actually how we found the sweet spot temperature for faceting n-SiC.
The paper on procedural nanoporous geometries will then be on this improved workflow topic since it allows you to generate unique, but statistically similar nanoporous materials without having to simulate each new geometry.
It also turns out that the CACS group at USC finished our paper on visualizing LAMMPS real-time in Unreal engine so that you can watch simulations in a virtual reality headset. This should also be included in the thesis I think.
Still counting! 66 days left 😀 Yesterday Henrik and I worked quite a bit on the special topics 5 credits course I need to take before I finish the PhD. We are working on faceting of silicon carbide nanocrystals, so we decided that learning about crystal growth is only natural to learn the terminology in the field and also relevant theory.
We are using this book by Alberto Pimpinelli and Jacques Villain:
which turns out to be a very weird book. Some things are explained in great detail, but some of the harder stuff have both typos (missing important factors) and a lack of explanation. I’m both impressed and disappointed at the same time.
So what is crystal growth? It is when you have a crystal (atoms sitting in a crystal lattice) and atoms are still changing the shape of the crystal. Maybe the crystal is surrounded by gas so every now and then another atom joins the crystal, diffuses around until it settles down in a nice place.
I also realize that these blog posts will sometimes explain good and often not 😛 My current thoughts are what I’ll write down and that might be messy sometimes =)
This blog was down for a year (which didn’t matter since I only had the welcome post and zero readers), but I managed to get it back up again. Ok, so I’m 31 years old and am going to finish my PhD thesis before July 1st. This process towards the end is probably going to be quite intense and I intend to blog about it to express feelings and thoughts.
Today it is 68 days left which isn’t much. I have quite a lot work left which can be summarized in finishing

- my last 5 credits which is in crystal growth
- write thesis.

I deleted my old blog because it looked horrible and I hadn’t written anything since the first two posts. And the reason why I didn’t write more was actually that it looked horrible 😀
